GLAUCOMA
GLAUCOMA IS THE 2nd LEADING CAUSE OF BLINDNESS in the united states
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is formally defined as the abnormal loss of retinal ganglion cells in the eye that results in long-term damage of the optic nerve. It is most often found amongst older adults and can be divided into two main categories: open-angle and angle-closure. In open-angle glaucoma (more common), the intraocular pressure (IOP) increases gradually over time. However, angle-closure glaucoma is characterized by a sudden increase of IOP, which is a medical emergency. The damage inflicted by glaucoma is irreversible, making it pertinent that the disease is spotted early during routine eye exams.
